Message	They have actually been in use since the early 90s. I currently have the Smoke Pro unit made by Redline. Its a great compact unit that is way smaller and easier to use than the original units that required their own cart and a tank of nitrogen. I use mine almost everyday at work. In my opinion, a smoke machine is the easiest and most effective way to find a vacuum leak on any vehicle. I also use my smoke machines to find Evap leaks, exhaust leaks, oil leaks, coolant leaks, AC system leaks, leaks in diesel egr coolers, wind and water leaks, and boost leaks. I have even developed my own method of incorporating smoke into a cylinder leak down test. If your interested in learning more, here is a link to an article I have from Motor magazine July 2003.
